World-class
research is at work every
day at The Liver Institute at Methodist Dallas
Medical Center. As an active and growing clinical
research center, Methodist Dallas cares for patients
all across Texas, working to bring about new treatments
that save lives today and lives of future generations
as well.
On any given day, The Institute has 20 to 30 trials
underway, spanning an entire spectrum of liver diseases
and sparking hope where there once was doubt.
A light for liver patients
Currently, a new study is testing a drug that may allow
patients to survive without a liver transplant.
Parvez Mantry, MD, hepatologist and director of
research at The Institute, explains what these exciting
findings could mean for patients: “We are one of only
two sites in North Texas that offer this novel drug, which
has tested safely and virtually free of side effects so far.
It has also been shown to prevent cirrhosis patients with
early symptoms of liver failure from advancing to a point
where they would need a transplant. It has the potential
to save their lives.”
The perks of participation
Patients seeking treatment through a clinical trial reap
quite a few incredible benefits. Not only do they receive
treatment free of charge, but they also get to be a part
of research that can change millions of lives, including
their own.
“The diseases we deal with are extremely challenging
and can often be life-threatening,” Dr. Mantry says.
“If we can extend the life span of these patients by
potentially 20 years as well as improve their quality
of life while doing it, well, that makes this worthwhile.”
