In December 2014, Methodist Dallas Medical Center received some big news
from The Joint Commission: Our pancreatic cancer program became the first to
be certified in Texas, and our pancreatic surgery program became the first to be
certified in the nation!
To celebrate these achievements, on Jan. 20 we hosted Go Purple for Pancreas,
an event attended by dozens of patients, families, clinicians, employees, and
community members.
With pancreatic cancer as the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the U.S.,
the event served as an occasion to remember those who have lost their lives to
pancreatic disease and to show support for survivors and their families.
The event also raised awareness of treatment options for pancreatic disease.
For example, the only cure is surgery, but only one-third of eligible patients
undergo the procedure — and many are never even given the option.
Methodist Dallas not only makes surgery available to patients throughout
the southern United States, but we’ve also embraced technological advances,
including the robotic Whipple procedure with the da Vinci® Surgical System. This
minimally invasive procedure results in less pain and faster healing for patients.

shared his story at the Go Purple for
Pancreas event. Here he and his wife,
Lea, stand before a banner bedecked

in memory of and in honor of those
affected by pancreatic disease. “If it
weren’t for this hospital, I wouldn’t
be here today,” Tim says.
