2012 is your year to be more than a New Year’s resolution-maker. It’s your
time to shine as a resolution-keeper.
The following tips fromStephen Drye, MD, an independently practicing
family medicine physician on the medical staff at Methodist Richardson
Medical Center, can help you succeed, no matter what your resolution.
Involve the people who love you.
“If your whole family or your support
group makes changes, it’s much easier,” Dr. Drye says.
Check your social circle.
If your resolution is to quit smoking, this tip is
especially for you, Dr. Drye says, because smokers are more tempted to
light up when they’re with other smokers. A little distance can help you
break the habit.
Write down your progress.
“The adage ‘When performance is measured,
performance improves’ applies here,” Dr. Drye says. On Jan. 1, write
down where you are, and at regular intervals — daily, weekly, monthly —
note your successes and failures. This will motivate you and help you
identify common pitfalls.
Really want it.
“If it’s something you know you want to do, you’re going to
find a way to do it,” Dr. Drye says.
With these pointers in practice, you’re bound to achieve your New
Year’s resolution. And once you do, don’t get comfortable, Dr. Drye says.
Keep setting new goals to avoid sliding back into old habits.
