If someone you love suddenly went into cardiac arrest,
would you know what to do? Call 911, of course, so
essential emergency medical services could be on
their way.
But if you were also able to start cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR) or, even better, use an automatic
external defibrillator (AED), you could significantly
increase his or her odds of surviving, says Brian
Kenjarski, MD, medical director of the emergency
department at Methodist Richardson Medical Center
and an independently practicing emergency medicine
physician on its medical staff.
“An AED device analyzes the condition the heart is
in and only delivers a shock if it needs to,” he says.
“The biggest difference I’ve seen in the emergency
department starts with the use of an AED in the field.
With the proper training and knowledge of what to
do, you canmake a big difference.”
