Wayne
and Chrisy Fagley don’t let a whole
lot slow them down.
Both have careers and live active lifestyles; she’s
a former high school and college athlete, and he’s
an avid runner. They also have twin daughters
who both recently graduated from college.
Increasingly over the past year, however, health
issues had been slowing down the couple’s fun.
“I had been through several knee procedures
growing up,” Mrs. Fagley says. “It was getting
to a point where I had truly tried everything,
and the pain just kept creeping back.”
Mr. Fagley didn’t grow up with pain as his
wife had; his hip problems emerged later in life.
“It was hard to get dressed in the morning,
hard to walk,” he says. “I couldn’t exercise at all.
I was hardly living.”
First steps
Mrs. Fagley was first to seek help. Her
physician assistant referred her to Shane
Seroyer, MD, orthopedic surgeon at
Methodist Mansfield Medical Center.
When Dr. Seroyer advised that a knee
replacement would be her best option,
Mrs. Fagley was directed to the Joint
Academy at Methodist Mansfield.
“We see great successes from our Joint
Academy patients,” Dr. Seroyer says. “This free
one-day program educates patients so that they
can prepare for their joint replacement procedure
and ultimately achieve the best possible surgical
results and return quickly to their normal lives
— actually, a new normal that is pain-free.”
Soon to follow
As Mr. Fagley observed how at ease his wife
was about her upcoming procedure, he realized
it was time for him to seek help, too. He
scheduled a left hip replacement just three
weeks after his wife’s knee replacement. They
sat side-by-side for their Joint Academy class.
“We were able to support each other before,
during, and after our procedures,” Mr. Fagley says.
While recovering at home, they found that
when one person needed help, the other could
pick up the slack. The support and encourage-
ment continued through rehabilitation together.
Walking in stride
The Fagleys say their joint replacement journey
strengthened their marriage and restored their
ability to enjoy life.
Now the couple is really ready to celebrate
their 30th wedding anniversary in July.
“If we had to go through this, I’m glad we
got to go through it together,” Mrs. Fagley
says, turning to her husband. “We’re looking
forward to really moving past the pain for the
first time in years.”

Methodist Health System is teaming up with Texas Health Resources and Centerre
Healthcare Corp. to build a 40-bed rehabilitation hospital in South Arlington.
Construction is planned on the facility this summer. When complete, it will serve
patients recovering from strokes and other brain or spinal cord injuries, amputations,
and other complex conditions. It’s expected to employ about 150 people.
