If your marathon training has run head-on into the brutal
Texas sun, it’s probably time to rethink your regimen.
One of the top considerations should be hydration,
says Darin Charles, MD, family medicine physician at
Methodist Family Health Center – Mansfield North.
“Hydrate well prior to running, and if you exercise for
more than an hour, drink fluids throughout the activity.
“You should also be aware of the signs of
dehydration and heat-related illness, like cramping,
nausea, disorientation, and light-headedness.”
If you plan to keep running outdoors, train in the
early-morning hours or in the evening.
To further limit your sun and heat exposure, select
a shaded trail, such as the Walnut Creek Linear Park.
The 1.9-mile concrete path boasts plenty of shade
and scenery and is easily accessible, with trailheads
at Town Park, Katherine Rose Memorial Park, and
the Allmon Soccer Complex.

“Swimming is fun at any age,” says Cody
Huckabay, Mansfield ISD Natatorium director
and a 23-year veteran of the sport. “It’s a great
cardiovascular workout that strengthens core
muscles, arms, and shoulders without all the
pounding on the joints. Plus, it’s a lifelong skill
that can save a life.”
Fun, fitness, and safety — these are all great
reasons to take the plunge and sign up your kids
for swim lessons.
“You’ll want to look for swim lessons with a
low student-to-teacher ratio, usually 4-to-1 if
you’re teaching young children,” Huckabay says.
He also advises making sure that the program’s
swim instructors are certified.
